PRPG.MX Incubator Residency
April 2022
Growing up in a bicultural home in the US means growing up with various identities. I have struggled with my cultural identity most of my life. Labels are quickly introduced to a conversation when I explain my family’s background. I felt my cultural identity fluctuated, depending on the people I was speaking with, in their attempt to categorize me and fit me into one of the commonplace ethnic ranks which ultimately was never representative of my background. I have found food and ingredient combinations to be a source of comfort and realignment. I use the gastronomy behind the meals I grew up with as an affirmation of my cultural upbringing. Learning to prepare Mexican and Spanish foods at home, using family recipes straight from my grandmother and mother, and sharing meals with my family built strong ties of identity and community for me.
