Terra Foundation / PCA studio visit with Sofia Fernandez-Garcia

Paris College of Art/Paris Nanterre University
November 2023-February 2024

Every semester, Liberal Studies & Art History Chair Barbara Montefalcone, along with members of the faculty, select a group of outstanding PCA students across departments and offer them the opportunity to take part in a unique research program based on the collection of the Terra Foundation for American Art Library. The project culminates in a public presentation at the Terra Foundation Center in Paris.

Throughout the semester, the group of selected students work as a team with Université Paris Nanterre Art History students through workshops and studio visits as well as presenting their findings to them.

The Department held the first Terra Foundation Program meeting of the year alongside Sofia Fernandez-Garcia MFA Photo and Image-Making student  Sofia Fernandez-Garcia  who was selected for the program this semester and in the presence of Dr.Michael Meere, PCA’s Provost. This session was in the form of a studio visit for M2 Art History students from Université Paris Nanterre where Ms. Garcia was able to present a selection of her works, some fully completed and some still in the development stage.

Her work touches on intimate and societal issues such as dealing with the complexities of depression through her photographic series titled “Holding the weight within”, the idea of practicing mindfulness in times of stress with the “Stones of Remembrance” project, a focus on mass shootings in Colorado and how such tragic events changes the location permanently for the locals of the area, mourning and time’s relentless passage and finally, the installation “Ni Una Más” which reflects on the devastating rise of femicide in Mexico whereby the last known images of recent victims of femicide are placed inside colourful “papel picado”, a traditional Mexican folk art used to decorate public spaces, homes and altars during celebrations.

Re-Emergence! Explorations in Printmaking & Photography

JULY 09 - AUGUST 28, 2021

"This juried exhibition features artwork from all around the world, with artists from across the US, as well as Canada, Italy, France, Ireland, and Barbados. The pieces in this show are connected by two common threads - first, they all explore the intersections between photography and printmaking, using techniques such as photogravure, cyanotype, transfer printing, platinum palladium prints, and much more. Second, they explore the theme of re-emergence. Some pieces explore this theme through motifs of new life, while others examine it through the lens of climate change and natural geological processes, reshaping the land around us in various ways. Others capture the complicated feelings we are all experiencing as we re-emerge from a devastating global pandemic - joy and hope, but also fear and sadness. The past year and a half has been a time of enormous change, loss, and uncertainty. As more and more of the population gets vaccinated and pandemic precautions are lifted, we are finally seeing glimmers of normalcy re-emerging - but this sense of normalcy feels a bit more fragile now that we know how easily it can be broken."
